On Monday October 23, 2023, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Idaho announced that a nurse practitioner pleaded guilty to health care fraud conspiracy charges. According to the press release, the defendant accepted kickbacks for signing “pre-filled medical orders” for durable medical equipment and cancer genomics tests without seeing the patients or making a medical necessity determination. The defendant received over $200,000 in illegal kickbacks under this arrangement, and Medicare issued $6.1 million in overpayments. The defendant could face a sentence of up to 10 years in federal prison.
