On October 20, 2023, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Virginia announced that a 71 year-old former nurse practitioner was sentenced to jailtime and fined after pleading guilty to one count of “using the DEA Registration number of another while prescribing controlled substances.” The defendant wrote prescriptions for Suboxone, a controlled substance used for treating narcotic dependence, using the DEA registration numbers of doctors who did not see the defendant’s patients. Charges against other individuals allegedly associated with this conduct remain pending.
