Report Finds Nearly All For-Profit Nursing Homes Would Not Meet Proposed New Requirements for Nursing Staff Mandate

A September 2023 KFF  report revealed that nearly all for-profit nursing homes would not comply with the proposed federal nursing home staffing mandate if it was implemented today. The report stated that 90% of for-profit nursing homes would need to hire more nursing staff to comply as compared to 60% of non-profit and government nursing homes. Compliance by state varied greatly, as 100% of facilities in Alaska would meet the RN and nurse aide HPRD requirements, but only 1% of facilities in Louisiana would meet requirements. Overall, the report found that fewer than 1 in 5 nursing facilities would meet the HPRD provisions in the proposed rule.
