Many healthcare regulatory flexibilities enacted for the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency ended on May 11, 2023, including the requirement for private insurers to cover COVID-19 tests and vaccinations. The World Health Organization further announced that COVID-19 is no longer a global health emergency, but the “global risk assessment remains high.” Although the Affordable Care Act mandates that private insurers must cover vaccines with no cost sharing when delivered in-network, there is no requirement to cover COVID-19 testing. The Biden administration is encouraging private insurers to continue coverage of COVID-19 tests, and Medicare and Medicaid will continue to cover lab tests and vaccinations.
