The United States has the highest maternal mortality rate of any developed nation, and its maternal mortality rate is more than double the rates of its peer countries. On May 19, 2023, HHS announced that it is awarding HRSA-funded health centers $65 million to help improve these maternal health outcomes. The funds will be used by the health centers to promote “healthier pregnancy and postpartum outcomes for all,” address disparities in medically underserved and rural communities, and address patients’ clinical and health-related social needs, such as through investment in bilingual doula services, technology, and comprehensive mental and behavioral health care.
