Congressional Budget Office Estimates the Proposed Telehealth Expansion Act Will Cost $5 Billion over the Next 10 Years

On June 26, 2023, the CBO released its cost estimate of nine bills from the House Committee on Ways and Means, including the bipartisan sponsored Telehealth Expansion Act or H.R. 1843.  This latter proposed bill exempts high deductible health insurance plans from meeting a required deductible before covering telehealth services for members. This bill would codify a provision from the CARES Act of 2020, and the CBO estimates that it would cost $5.1 billion through reduced revenues over the 2023-2033 period. The  Alliance for Connected Care, a telehealth lobbying group has stated that the provision may impact more than 32 million Americans.
