On June 5, 2023, CMS officially withdrew its COVID-19 vaccination requirements for healthcare staff in a final rule. The interim final rule requiring that staff for most healthcare organizations participating in Medicare and Medicaid receive their primary vaccine series had been in place since November 2021, but due to “increased vaccine uptake, declining infection and death rates, decreasing severity of disease, increased instances of infection-induced immunity, public comments submitted to CMS, and the addition of COVID–19 vaccination quality measures to quality improvement and reporting programs,” CMS determined the requirements were no longer necessary.
