States Considering Bills Targeting Transgender Health Care

Republican lawmakers in numerous states have filed bills proposing to limit “gender-affirming health care” and abortion access for LGBTQ people. Numerous bills seek to criminalize those who help trans children obtain such health care, in particular, parents and health care providers. Such health care includes providing hormone treatment and/or performing sex-change surgeries. Bills filed in the Texas legislature even go so far as to characterize gender-affirming care of minors as child abuse. On the other hand, The World Professional Association for Transgender Health argues that such “gender-affirming health care” can be healthy for teens because it can improve mental health and reduce suicide.  Bills in some states go further, proposing to ban gender-affirming treatment for patients up to the age of 26.
