Period Tracking Apps & Privacy Laws Implicated by Bill in Washington State

After the Supreme Court rescinded the constitutional right to an abortion last year, social media apps and other outlets warned about using period tracking apps as they could be storing and sharing important health information. Current federal privacy laws, such as HIPAA, do not currently protect health information that people provide to period tracking apps and other health sites. Lawmakers in Washington state who want to change that have introduced a bill, HB 1155, which pertains to collecting , and sharing, and prohibits the selling of consumer health data. HB 1155 and a companion bill go next to the House Civil Rights and Judiciary Committee.
