Nurses’ Strike Ends at 2 New York City Hospitals

More than 7,000 nurses at Mount Sinai Medical Center and Montefiore Medical Center went on strike to demand better wages and working conditions. The Mount Sinai nurses, who are members of the New York State Nurses Association (the union), went on strike at 6 a.m. Monday January 9, 2023. Nurses from Montefiore Medical Center’s three campuses in the Bronx likewise went on strike over similar pay and staffing issues.

Understaffing at hospitals has been increasing for years, was compounded by COVID, and has been exacerbated by the addition of patients with RSV and flu.  Many striking nurses commented that their primary goal was improving working conditions by adding more nurses. On January 12, the striking nurses returned to work after their union and the employer reached a tentative collective bargaining agreement.
