Connecticut-based Athena Health Care Systems has come under fire with three New England states following complaints regarding conditions of their nursing homes and failure to pay staff. Six staffing agencies have filed lawsuits with allegations of failure to pay over $142,000 in fees for providing staff. Another suit alleges that Athena owes nearly $2M to another staffing company. This comes after being ordered to pay a $1.75M fine, the largest ever issued in Massachusetts, for admitting patients with substance use disorder and failing to provide adequate treatment and programs for their conditions and recovery. Between October 1, 2021 and September 30, 2022 Connecticut alone received 518 complaints regarding the conditions of Athena facilities. Athena operates more than 40 long-term care facilities in New England and may now be at risk for failure to comply with proper participation with Medicare or Medicaid which accounts for 70% of nursing home residents in Connecticut alone.
