Nurse Practitioners with Clinically Related Doctorates Challenge California Law on Use of “Doctor” Title; Noted Ethicist Disagrees with Suit’s Premise

As reported in the August 4th edition of HLBytes, current California medical practice law permits only MDs and DOs to use the title “doctor.” Three nurses who completed PhDs in fields clinically related to their work have filed suit challenging the law.  Renowned bioethicist Art Caplan of the NYU Grossman School of Medicine’s Division of Medical Ethics disagrees, arguing instead that  referring to nurses as “doctor” would lead to confusion of skill sets.
