In an action that has received mixed reviews from those in the nursing home industry, President Biden recently signed an executive order that would, according to the White House-released fact sheet, build on minimum staffing standards and tie a portion of facilities’ Medicare payments to their employee retention rates. However, not everyone has been pleased with this newly issued order. LeadingAge, an association of nonprofit aging services providers, has said that “[t]he order bolsters the home care workforce, while punishing nursing home providers for shortages.” Proponents of the order, including the American Health Care Association National Center for Assisted Living, have praised it for addressing the industry’s historic workforce shortage.
