Pharmacy Chains on the Hook: CVS, Walmart and Walgreens Required to Pay Towards Opioid Crisis

On August 17, a federal judge ordered CVS, Walgreens and Walmart to pay a combined $650 million to two Ohio counties. This amount is to address the drug companies’ involvement in and contribution to the opioid crisis. This is the first time pharmacy chains have been required to pay. Walgreens and CVS have already announced they plan to appeal the ruling, arguing that this ruling has no basis in law, and they cannot be liable for filling legal prescriptions provided by physicians.
