On October 25, Texas doctor Daniel R. Canchola pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud for his part in a $54 million scheme to defraud Medicare by signing orders for durable medical equipment and cancer genetic testing when he never spoke with, saw, or treated the patients for whom the orders were written. Patients were targeted by telemarketing campaigns and health fairs. Dr. Canchola received approximately $30 per prescription for ordering medically unnecessary DME and genetic tests, receiving a total of over $466,000 in kickbacks between August 2018 and April 2019. Dr. Canchola’s sentencing is set for March 15, 2023, and he faces up to 20 years in federal prison.
