CMS Announces Extension of BPCI Model

CMS) announced on October 13 that the Bundled Payments for Care Improvement Advanced Model (“Model”) will be extended for two years to December 31, 2025.  The CMS Innovation Center developed the value-based payment model and set the voluntary program to run from October 1, 2018 through December 31, 2023.  The aim of the Model is to support providers who implement innovations to improve the coordination and quality of care while lowering expenses.

The Model combines payments for hospital, physician, and other health care services into a single bundled payment that is calculated based on expected costs of all services and items that may be furnished to a beneficiary during a clinical episode.  The Model is voluntary; contains eight clinical episode service lines groups; and ties the payment to performance based on quality measures.

Participation is voluntary and open to eligible organizations throughout the United States, the U.S. territories, and the District of Columbia.  CMS currently plans to request applications from Medicare providers, suppliers, and other organizations in early 2023 for participation in the two-year extension.
