On October 6, CMS published its 2023 Medicare Advantage and Medicare Part D Star Ratings, which annually measure the quality of services received by enrollees in Medicare Advantage and Prescription Drug Plans. The star ratings aim to help individuals compare the quality of the various Medicare Advantage and Medicare Part D plans when they are seeking Medicare Advantage or Medicare Part D coverage. Importantly, CMS also utilizes the star ratings to grant quality bonuses to Medicare Advantage insurers that earn at least 4 stars. Star ratings of Medicare Advantage and Medicare Part D plans appeared to fall industry-wide this year With a nearly a 20% decrease in the number of Medicare Advantage plans with pharmacy benefits that received at least 4 stars this year when compared to the 2022 Medicare Advantage and Medicare Part D Star Ratings.
