Adverse Events in Hospitals: A Quarter of Medicare Patients Experienced Harm in October 2018.

An OIG report found that, during October 2018,  twenty-five percent of Medicare patients experienced some form of patient harm during a hospital stay. Twelve percent suffered adverse events that resulted in longer hospital stays, life-saving intervention, permanent harm, or death.  The remaining patients experienced temporary harm that was addressed promptly by providers. OIG’s report includes seven recommendations for CMS and AHRQ, the agencies that regulate the providers.
