The American Academy of Pediatrics has called for the removal of race-based medicine in a policy released earlier this month. AAP’s Policy Statement on Eliminating Race-Based Medicine characterizes race-based medicine as the “misuse of race as a corrective or risk-adjusting variable in clinical algorithms or practice guidelines.” The policy identifies a number of problematic uses of race-based medicine in areas from kidney disease to heart disease. Going forward, the policy calls for providers, professional organizations, medical specialty societies, institutions, and researchers to reappraise their current policies, practices, and guidelines.
