On June 7, the FTC announced the launch of an inquiry into the pharmacy benefit management industry. The FTC will scrutinize the impact of vertically integrated pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) on the access and affordability of prescription drugs and shed light on certain PBM practices. As part of the inquiry, the FTC has issued compulsory orders to the six largest PBMs (CVS Caremark; Express Scripts, Inc.; OptumRx, Inc.; Humana Inc.; Prime Therapeutics LLC; and MedImpact Healthcare Systems, Inc.) requesting information and records related to their business practices.
