DHHS through HRSA recently awarded over $155 million to health centers across the country in an effort to expand access to primary care and mental health support services in underserved and rural areas. The grants were awarded to 72 teaching health centers that operate primary care or mental health support residency programs, where there is an urgent need for more providers. The American Rescue Plan funded the majority of the grants along with Fiscal Year 2022 funds. The funding is aimed at reducing the physician shortage, which is projected to reach a shortage range of between 17,800 and 48,000 primary care physicians by 2034.
