The D.C. Court of Appeals recently disbarred a lawyer for violating numerous D.C. Rules of Professional Conduct while misusing cash from seven clients that were military veterans. ccording to the Hearing Committee Report, one veteran had retained the lawyer to represent him against possible criminal charges, a threatened discharge from the United States Navy, and the suspension of his security clearance. The Report found that, among other things, without seeking or obtaining the client’s consent and without having done the work that the client retained him to do, the lawyer withdrew almost all of the client’s funds from the trust account within one day. The Court of Appeals agreed.
