On November 30, New York City opened two Overdose Prevention Centers. The CDC estimates that drug overdose deaths in the U.S. were up 29.4% in 2020 from the deaths predicted in 2019. Specifically in New York City, more than 2,000 people died of overdoses last year according to the Health Department. These new sites are meant to prevent overdose deaths by providing clean needles, administering treatment in the event of an overdose, and providing awareness and referrals for drug treatment programs and other social services.
