Potential New Ransomware Reporting Requirements in Proposed Bill

On October 5, Senator Elizabeth Warren and Representative Deborah Ross introduced a bill requiring ransomware attack victims to disclose to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) payments made to attackers within 48 hours after making the payment . The Ransom Disclosure Act would provide DHS with data for investigating ransomware attacks and to enhance DHS’s understanding of cybercriminal operations. In 2019–2020, ransomware attacks increased by 158% in the U.S. and by 62% worldwide.
