The HHS-OIG released a report on October 1 revealing Medicare overpaid $636 million for neurostimulator implantation surgeries performed in 2016 and 2017. The OIG concluded that nearly 40% of healthcare providers covered by the audit did not comply with the Medicare requirements when billing for these surgeries. OIG provided CMS with several recommendations, including requiring prior authorization for surgeries treating Parkinson’s disease and seizure disorders, reopening claims during the 4-year reopening period, and notifying providers with potential overpayments so they can address the overpayments pursuant to the 60-day rule. CMS concurred with the recommendations.
