During Maryland’s 2021 legislative session, Mental and Emotional Disorders – Consent (Mental Health Access Initiative) legislation was passed. This bill will raise the age to 16 where a minor can consent to consultation, diagnosis, and certain treatments of a mental or emotional disorder by a health care provider without their parents’ permission. Senator Malcolm L. Augustine (D-Prince George’s County), the sponsor of the bill, hopes that this bill will provide access to those adolescents who suffer from depression and feel isolated. Governor Larry Hogan (R) allowed the bill to become law without his signature.
