Four drugmakers, Johnson & Johnson, Teva Pharmaceutical Ltd., Allergan and Endo International, went on trial on April 19th in California regarding their involvement in the opioid epidemic. Specifically, prosecutors are alleging these companies ran misleading marketing campaigns that downplayed the risks of opioid addiction to boost opioid sales. It is expected that the companies will argue that they used responsible marketing tactics with regulatory oversight and that they only had a small fraction of the pill market in the California communities. A spokesperson from Teva indicated that they would consider a national settlement. Johnson & Johnson stated that it will challenge the claims and declined to consider a settlement.
