According to the American Heart Association, Americans spend over $22 billion annually on chocolate with a substantial amount of that consumption around Valentine’s Day. February is also American Heart Month. To celebrate a heart healthy Valentine’s Day, opt for dark chocolate. It contains flavonols, a subtype of flavonoids associated with a lower risk of heart disease. But more importantly, dark chocolate contains less sugar and saturated fats than milk and white chocolate.
