Massachusetts Governor Signs Law Expanding the Scope of Practice for Advanced Practice Nurses and Optometrists

Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker signed a new law that will allow nurse practitioners and other advanced practice nurses practice without physician oversight. The measure also expands scope of practice for optometrists. Massachusetts joins twenty-two other states, plus DC, that permit APRNs to practice independently. The move is championed by leading nursing groups, such as the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, and criticized by the American Medical Association.
