House Bill H.R. 8723 proposes that states adopt the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact (“Compact”) in order to receive continued funding from the Bureau of Health Workforce. The Compact is an agreement among participating states (only 29 states, the District of Columbia and the Territory of Guam currently participate) to work together to significantly streamline the licensing process for physicians who want to practice in multiple states. The Compact offers an expedited application process for qualifying physicians to obtain a license to practice medicine in various states, and spurred on by the COVID-19 pandemic, H.R. 8723 is proposed in an attempt to promote a free flow of qualified physicians across the country.
