FTC Announces Expansion of Merger Retrospective Program

The FTC’s Bureau of Economics recently announced plans to revamp the Merger Retrospective Program, expanding the Bureau’s retrospective research efforts. Research and analysis performed by the Bureau determines whether and how competition has been affected in the market by a particular merger.  As part of the announcement, FTC Chairman Joseph Simons stated, “The goal of this initiative is to encourage economists both inside and outside the agency to carry out more retrospective studies to test our analytical tools and strengthen our enforcement efforts.” The expansion may allow for greater scrutiny of transactions going forward.
