On August 24, OCR issued updated guidance on contacting former COVID-19 patients about blood plasma donation in a HIPAA-compliant manner. In June, OCR released guidance that explains how covered health care providers can identify and contact patients and beneficiaries who have recovered from COVID-19 to inquire whether they would be willing to donate plasma to potentially help other COVID patients. The June guidance also warned covered entities against using or disclosing protected health information for marketing purposes. OCR released an updated version of that guidance on August 24 to address similar communications from health plans.
