On September 14, the VA announced a data breach involving the personal information of an estimated 46,000 Veterans. The VA Financial Services Center (“FSC”) discovered that one of its online applications was compromised by unauthorized users who intended to divert payments that were meant for health care providers for the medical treatment of Veterans. It is believed that the unauthorized users gained access to the application via the exploitation of authentication protocols and social engineering techniques. All affected individuals are being notified of the breach and credit monitoring services are being provided by the FSC at no charge for any individual with a compromised social security number.
