Attorney General Becerra Attempts to Extend His Power through Assembly Bill 6

On August 29, in the final days of the legislative session, Assembly Bill 6 came before the California State Legislature with the support of Attorney General Xavier Becerra. The legislation would expand the powers of the Attorney General by granting the ability to release any claims that may be brought by the State and other government entities in California, including cities and counties, related to marketing, distribution, or sale of opioids, or related activity. According to Becerra, this is necessary to allow his office the leverage to assure defendants that future claims will not be brought. The legislation would only apply to claims filed after August 24, 2020.
