On Monday, August 17, CMS issued a memo announcing that, effective immediately, it will resume routine inspections of all Medicare and Medicaid certified providers and suppliers that were previously put on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In the memo, CMS directed the resumption of onsite revisit surveys, complaint investigations that are triaged as non-immediate jeopardy surveys, and annual recertification surveys as soon as the states have the resources to do so. Additionally, CMS provided guidance on resolving enforcement cases that were previously on hold because of survey prioritization changes. In addition, CMS indicated that the agency will temporarily expand the desk review policy to include all noncompliance reviews except for immediate jeopardy citations that have not been removed when state surveyors ensure that facilities return back into compliance with Federal requirements without an onsite survey.
