It is not difficult to see the toll the COVID-19 pandemic has taken on hospitals because hospitals are not able to perform elective surgeries. Managed care companies know these surgeries will begin again, and some having been left untreated are going to ultimately cost the managed care companies more than they would have otherwise. However, there are other, less than obvious, issues arising from the pandemic which could have a significant cost impact to managed care plans. The KFF has studied behavioral health during this time, and found the national incidences of reported anxiety and depression have risen from 11% in 2019 to roughly 36.5% in 2020. Knowing medical and behavioral health comorbidities are much more harmful and expensive to treat, managed care plans will have to come up with a solution.
