Military Doctors and Nurses Deployed to Hospitals in Need of Increased COVID-19 Staffing

At the request of the States of Texas and California, approximately 740 medical professionals from the Army, Navy, and Air Force deployed this week to hospitals in those states facing staffing shortages amidst surges of COVID-19 patients. In California, 20 Air Force medical professionals were sent to eight hospitals in need of staff to treat COVID-19 patients in their intensive care units. These medical teams included physicians, nurses, and other health care specialists, such as respiratory therapists. Although the hospitals receiving military support still had sufficient bed capacity to treat COVID-19 patients, they were at risk of exceeding their staffing capacity without additional support.
