CMS Issues Proposed Rule Adjusting Payments for Home ESRD Treatment

On July 6, CMS issued proposed changes to the Medicare End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) Prospective Payment System. CMS proposes that the transitional add-on payment adjustment for new and innovative equipment and supplies now include qualifying new dialysis machines when used at home. This change would provide a new form of payment to expand access to new and innovative home dialysis machines. Those with ESRD have the highest rate of hospitalization due to COVID-19 among all Medicare recipients, and they often spend a significant amount of time away from home to receive their dialysis treatment. The proposed changes are designed to make it easier for ESRD patients to receive their dialysis treatment while remaining indoors during the pandemic.
