On April 14, President Trump announced the Dynamic Ventilator Reserve Plan (Plan) designed to make up to 60,000 ventilators immediately available to help patients suffering from COVID-19. The White House stated that the Plan was created because it had found that as many as 60,000 ventilators in hospitals across the country are currently idle. With assistance from the American Hospital Association, the Plan seeks to shift these critical resources from hospitals without a need to those facilities struggling with a ventilator shortage. For a facility to gain access to the loaned ventilators, the facility must agree to supply its own ventilators when the facility no longer has a need for them. According to Administration officials, 20 health systems have already agreed to participate in the Plan, which has already redistributed 4,000 ventilators.
