COVID-19 Potentially Exacerbates Opioid Epidemic

The outbreak of COVID-19 could cause an increase in the use of opioids, making the opioid epidemic even worse. According to Bloomberg Law, experts believe that the fear and anxiety associated with the possible contraction of COVID-19 could cause those already suffering from opioid addiction to relapse or fall deeper into addiction. Many centers have started to offer mental health services online. However, with Zoom’s recent security breach, many have concerns as to how to properly protect these vulnerable patients. To address this issue, the American Society of Addiction Medicine has updated its  guidelines on how to properly effectuate these services.
