The Military Health System is restructuring military medical treatment facilities. Over 50 facilities will begin only serving active duty personnel. Currently, there is no timeline or projected savings for the change, although it is expected to take years and cut costs. The change will require more than 200,000 retirees and military family members to switch to off-base, private sector medical care. Retirees will be able to use Tricare to cover medical and dental treatment, but will be responsible for copays and other out-of-pocket costs not currently charged at on-base facilities.
