On March 16, the House of Representatives passed the Families First Coronavirus Response Act (HR 6201) on a bipartisan basis. The Senate is considering the bill this week and the President is expected to sign it into law. Division F of the bill requires health plans to cover Food and Drug Administration approved COVID-19 testing without cost sharing or medical management requirements during the current emergency (as defined by Social Security Act § 1135(g)). Many health plans have already implemented this level of coverage for FDA approved COVID-19 testing voluntarily. Extending coverage without cost sharing or medical management requirements to treatment of the COVID-19 illness is not included in the bill. A recent survey of nearly 600 individual and family health insurance enrollees shows that more than two thirds (69%) feel they lack a basic understanding of how testing and treatment of coronavirus (COVID-19) would be covered by their health insurance plan.
