South Dakota House Passes Bill Restricting Medical Treatments for Transgender Youth

On January 29, the South Dakota House of Representatives passed a bill that would make it a crime for physicians to provide hormone therapy, sex reassignment surgery, and other related medical procedures to minors under the age of 16. South Dakota is the first state in the nation to consider restricting medical interventions for transgender youth.  Under the proposed law, physicians who provide treatment to children under the age of 16 could be found guilty of a misdemeanor and sentenced up to one year in jail and fined up to $2,000. The ACLU of South Dakota has threatened a legal challenge if the bill becomes law.
