On January 13, CMS announced that psychiatric hospital compliance reviews will be streamlined as part of a push to reduce regulatory burden in the health-care industry. Currently, psychiatric hospitals must undergo two separate on-site compliance exams – one by the state to check compliance with conditions of participation, and one by an outside contractor for additional federal requirements for psychiatric hospitals. Under the new process, psychiatric hospitals will receive one comprehensive hospital survey by state inspectors to review compliance with both hospital and psychiatric hospital standards.
