New York Doctor Convicted of Taking Kickbacks from Opioid Maker

A New York doctor was convicted December 5 of taking kickbacks and thousands of dollars in bribes from opioid maker Insys Therapeutics to prescribe patients “addictive fentanyl spray” produced by Insys. Freedman was found guilty of “conspiring to violate the Anti-Kickback Statute and conspiring to commit honest services wire fraud”. Allegedly the company would bribe doctors “by retaining them to act as speakers at sham events” to educate others about their fentanyl spray. Dr. Freedman was one of 5 doctors in New York indicted in March 2018 for accepting kickbacks from Insys.
