Four Major Chicago Hospitals Discuss Merger

Four hospitals that serve some of Chicago’s poorest residents are negotiating a merger. The hospitals in negotiations, Advocate Trinity Hospital, Mercy Hospital & Medical Center, South Shore Hospital, and St. Bernard Hospital, are in talks with the state of Illinois to create a single healthcare system with one leadership team, combining inpatient, outpatient, emergency services, and skilled nursing services. There is pressure to merge as inpatient volume continues to fall and expenses rise.
