Proposed Wisconsin Patient Counseling Rule Would Impact Mail Order Pharmacies

On October 28, during its ongoing rulemaking process, the Wisconsin Pharmacy Examining Board (Board) continued to discuss proposed rule 7.08, which would require mail order pharmacies to contact patients to provide counseling prior to mailing the prescription to the patient. Unlike the existing rule, the proposed rule does not allow a mail order pharmacy to provide counseling information solely via written materials, or offer a toll-free telephone number for patients for counselling. The Board appears to be leaning towards mandatory verbal counseling before dispensing new prescriptions and changes in therapy unless a pharmacist decides such counseling is not appropriate in their professional judgement.
