Survey Shows Most States Protect Physicians Who Refuse To Perform Abortions Due To Religion

A national survey published November 19 found that 46 states had laws protecting health care institutions and professionals from being sued for adverse consequences related to a refusal to provide abortion services out of conscience. According to the survey, these laws generally establish immunity for the health care provider or entity who choose not to perform abortions due to religious objections. 37 states also contain specific laws prohibiting civil lawsuits against conscientious refusers.
