On October 23, A Tennessee medical doctor and an advanced practice registered nurse were charged in an indictment unsealed October 29 for their roles in alleged unlawful distribution of controlled substances. According to the indictment, Hemal V. Mehta, M.D and Heather L. Marks, APRN, conspired to distribute Schedule II controlled substances between 2016 and 2018. With Mehta supervising the APRN practice of Marks, the pair prescribed controlled substances, including oxycodone, morphine sulfate, and oxymorphone, to patients outside the usual course of professional practice and without a legitimate medical purpose.
