Minnesota Hospitals Experience Increase in Veteran Patient Population

The MISSION Act, which took effect in June 2019, established a community care program allowing veterans to seek non-emergency care at hospitals and clinics in the VA network.  This urgent care initiative was implemented with hopes of decreasing travel time for Veterans who may live considerable distances from the nearest VA facility.  Hospitals in Madelia and St. Peter, Minnesota report an increase in Veteran clientele post-MISSION Act.  The two hospitals are authorized to offer services including colonoscopies, pain injections, and imaging.  Although some treatments require prior VA approval, the hospitals also offer assistance to Veterans to streamline the authorization process.
